Complaints Process

As defined in CRS Section 12-315-104(25), CACVT is the credentialing organization appointed by the Colorado State Board of Veterinary Medicine (SBVM). CACVT’s primary purpose is to establish credentialing criteria and verify credentials for veterinary technicians in the state of Colorado as set forth in the Veterinary Practice Act (VPA). Additionally, to verify that persons have met, and continue to meet regularly, the established criteria necessary to qualify for registration with DORA as a Registered Veterinary Technician under the VPA and its underlying rules and regulations.

As a regulated profession, veterinary technicians are governed by the State Board of Veterinary Medicine and the VPA, Rules and Regulations, Policies, and other Colorado state statutes. As the credentialing organization, CACVT will investigate any issue that may affect the issuance of an individual's credential. Anyone can file a complaint online by completing a Veterinary Technician Complaint Form. The complaint will be reviewed by the Credentialing Council to determine if there was a violation warranting investigation.

Beginning January 1, 2024, the VPA restricts the titles Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) and Veterinary Technician (VT) to individuals who have received a registration from DORA. Title misrepresentation complaints can be filed directly with DORA. For assistance, please reach out to [email protected].

Most complaints will need to be directed to the Colorado State Board of Veterinary Medicine. If you are unsure, please reach out to [email protected] for further discussion. If an investigation reveals evidence warranting action, CACVT will follow the process outlined in the Disciplinary Policy.

Filing a complaint

  1. Complete the Veterinary Technician Complaint Form
  2. Provide the name and contact information for the subject of the complaint
  3. Confirm date of events and names of witnesses
  4. Describe the complaint in as much detail as possible

The complaint will be reviewed and action taken based on CACVT's Disciplinary Policy. If the complaint needs to be filed with the SBVM, a CACVT representative will follow up with the individual who filed the complaint.

Responding to a complaint

Should a complaint require further action, the individual subject to the complaint will be provided written notification of the nature of the complaint and provided an opportunity to respond in writing. Should it become necessary, the complaint will be discussed in a hearing with the CACVT Credentialing Council.
