Steps for a previous CVT to become a Registered Veterinary Technician in Colorado
Were you previously an active CVT in Colorado and need to register with the state? The title CVT is now obsolete, and all individuals using the title Veterinary Technician need to be registered with DORA starting 1/1/24.
- Check to see if you are qualified by checking our certification directory for an active status and an expiration date of 6/30/2024 or after.
- If you are not active and your expiration date is prior to 6/30/2024, please see our Expired Credential Reinstatement page
- While verifying eligibility in the certification directory, also ensure the accuracy of your legal first and last named. DORA requires a current legal name to process registration applications.
- Should you need to change your name, complete the Name Change form prior to obtaining the proof of credential certificate (step 3).
- There is a $25 fee to reprint credential certificates for name change purposes. Please contact [email protected] to request a reprint.
- Obtain your Proof of Credential Certificate.
- The link above will prompt you to log in to your profile.
- Under your name tag, click Access Credential Certificate
- Click details under "Credential Certificate"
- You will then click Step 1: Certificate Generator.
- Once you read the directions, click Next: Step 2: Registration Information.
- After a few minutes, a PDF of your credential certificate will be emailed to the address in your profile. Please check all folders (junk, updates, spam, etc.) if you don't find the email in your main inbox.
- The email will also list the next steps to complete the registration process.
- Apply for registration with DORA.
- Registration with the state is a separate process through DORA's Department of Professions and Occupations.
- You will want to make an online account with DORA by clicking register at their login page. Once they verify your email address, you can complete the application for veterinary technician registration.
- If the link is reporting an error, try a different web browser or contact their help team at 303.894.7800 or [email protected]
- You will need your credential certificate in a digital file to complete the registration application.
Once you are registered, you are legally allowed to use the titles Registered Veterinary Technician or Veterinary Technician…and the credentials RVT or VT. Those titles and credentials are legally protected in Colorado's Veterinary Practice Act, and unqualified individuals are subject to disciplinary action.
